Aging-In-Place / Universal Design
Make Your House a "Home" For a Lifetime
Whether you are building a new home or remodeling your current home, our Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) professional, can provide you with solutions to make your home safer, more accessible and, ultimately, more livable.
Our CAPS certified staff are experts in designing and building aesthetically enriching, barrier-free living environments. They have been trained in the unique needs of an older adult population and apply strategies and techniques to provide comprehensive and practical home modification solutions.
The CAPS Designation was developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and is administered by the NAHB. Modifying your home with a CAPS can potentially be less expensive than alternative solutions in the future.
What is Aging in Place?
Aging-in-place means being able to remain in one’s home safely, independently and comfortably regardless of age, income or ability level; so that people can age in place and not have to move to assisted-living facilities as they age. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one’s maturing years and being able to call their house a “home” for a lifetime.
If you are like the majority of Americans over the age of 45, you want to continue living in your same home and community, you would need to incorporate AIP principles in to your home.
Modifying your home not only allows you to stay in the place you love, it can potentially be less expensive than alternative arrangements.
To age in place, you will probably need to make alterations to your home to improve safety, access and maneuverability.
Things to Consider:
- Sleeping and bathroom space of a multi-level house: Do I want to add a bathroom and possibly a bedroom to the main level?
- Functional and universal kitchen: How can I make my kitchen more functional?
- Are my hallways and entryways barrier-free?
- Am I worried about preventing falls? According to the CDC, about one in three adults over the age of 65 has a fall each year. Source: Falls Among Older Adults: An Overview (September 20, 2012)
- Will other members of my family benefit from modifications? An aunt or a child with an unexpected broken leg?
- What changes do I want in place today? What changes will I want in the future?
- Maybe you are thinking long-term. You might be fine today, but you are looking at your future needs and want to make your home livable.
What is Universal Design?
We design spaces to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Universal Design benefits people of all ages. Universal Design elements can be integrated to manage a temporary need and enhance the livability of your home for many years to come.
Universal design doesn’t cost anymore during the project phase, it just needs to be the thought about and incorporated into the design ideas from the beginning.
If you would like to stay in the home and community you love, invest in the comfort and functionality of your home.
